OriginsFounded by Scourmont in 1954; raised to the rank of priory 1988; raised to the rank of abbey in 2023.
History
- 1952: in 1952-1953 2 monks of Scourmont stayed in the area for three months to investigate the possibility of making a foundation. They chose Mungerrebero, a peninsula in Lake Kivu, but they were unable to obtain the necessary concession. Nevertheless, they had a small property which was enough to provide for the needs of the founders during this trial period.
- 1954: a property is purchased 200 km farther north on the shore of Lake Mokoto. The small community made its permanent residence there. The founders left for Congo Feb. 5. The first local novice was sent to Scourmont in December of the same year.
