OriginsFounded by Gethsemani 1949; raised to the rank of abbey 1955.
History
- Founded on a property donated by Clare Boothe Luce, American Ambassador to Rome. The property is located about 40 km from Charleston, in the Cooper river valley. The soil is fertile and suitable for many crops. Much of the land is forested. The climate is ideal for 10 months of the year, the other two months being humid.
