OriginsAncient abbey founded by Morimond in 1134, re-established by La Valsainte January 27, 1816. It was raised to the status of abbey in 1834.
History
  • 1815, 16 November: the former abbey of Aiguebelle was bought by Fr. Bernard Bouisse, cellarer of la Val-Sainte, authorized representative of Dom de Lestrange. On 20 November he took possession of the monastery.
  • 1817: reconciliation of the church by Dom de Lestrange.
  • 1826: acquisition of the convent of N.D. des Lumieres near Avignon for the children of the Third Order. The house was given to the O.M.I. in 1836.
  • 1839, 16 July: saintly death of Fr. Ephrem Ferrer.
  • 1842, 15 November: Foundation of Roquereyne (near Albi). Abandoned in February, 1843.
  • 1843, 26 March: the future pope Leo XIII visits the monastery on his way to the nunciature in Brussels.
  • 1849, 14 October: Rev. Fr. Muard, founder of la Pierre-qui-vire, arrived to make his noviciate.
  • 1856, 24 September: consecration of the monastery church.
  • 1896, 12 September: the general chapter is held at Aiguebelle.
  • 1926-1937: renovation of the monastery.
  • 1937, 24 May: the church is made a minor basilica.
  • 1937, 14 September: Marian Congress, presided by the pontifical legate, in commemoration of the eighth centenary of foundation.
  • 1937: Sept., a colony is sent to Acey.
  • 1964: Dom Ignace Gillet is elected abbot general of the Order.
